how genetic testing Can help you find the right psychiatric medication

Struggling to find the right psychiatric medication can feel like trial and error. But did you know your genes can offer clues about how your body processes medications?

No more guessing games with medications. Here's how your DNA can help guide mental health treatment.

What Is Pharmacogenomic Testing?

Pharmacogenomics (PGx) is the science of how your genes affect your response to medications. In mental health, it can help identify how your body may metabolize different psychiatric medications — including antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and medications used for anxiety or ADHD.

At Brain & Bloom, I offer genetic testing as an optional tool to support personalized medication decisions, especially if you’ve experienced side effects or haven’t found the right fit yet.

Who Is Genetic Testing For?

Genetic testing may be especially helpful for clients who:

• Have tried multiple medications with limited success

• Experience frequent side effects

• Are sensitive to medications or dose changes

• Are new to psychiatric medication and want to minimize trial-and-error

• Have a family history of poor medication response

What Does the Process Involve?

It’s simple and non-invasive:

• A cheek swab is used to collect a DNA sample (mailed right to your home)

• The sample is sent to a CLIA-certified lab.

• Results are returned in about 2 weeks.

• We review the report together in a follow-up appointment and discuss how your genetics may influence current or future treatment decisions.

What Does the Report Tell You?

Your report may include:

• How fast or slow your body metabolizes certain medications

• Which medications may have a higher likelihood of side effects

• Which medications might require higher or lower doses based on your metabolism

• Possible gene-drug interactions (for example, with SSRIs or stimulants)

Note: This test doesn’t diagnose mental health conditions or guarantee outcomes, but it’s a helpful guide alongside clinical judgment.

How I Use Genetic Testing in My Practice

At Brain & Bloom, I integrate pharmacogenomic testing into treatment planning when it may be helpful. It’s not required and it’s not a replacement for ongoing conversations about how you’re feeling and responding. It’s simply one more tool to guide compassionate, individualized care.
